Talking points

What makes for strong children?

Thinking from the Bush Meeting in July 2007...
  • "Our education is out here in the bush.”
  • “In our learning the curriculum goes side by side- we learn science, the environment, land management, health, medicine, food and how to save game for the next generation… we learn all these things together.”
  • “At least 50% ... or up to 90% of time children need to learn on country.”
What do you think?

Thinking from Learning Circle 5 in Feb 2008...

Growing strong children, means growing strong identities - issues and ways forward

Bullying and not knowing who you are

Cissy: “there's a lot of bullying and trouble goes on in school.. its because they (Indigenous children) don't know who they are...They don't know that they are all family all related. They have to learn that so they know to take care of each other because they are all family.”

Ways forward LC participants discussed

How playgroups can help:

  • Bring in elders to help the children find out who they are… who's their family and their skin groups.
  • Be a place where children get to know who they are related to.
  • Be a place where children have total emersion in home languages/
  • Be a place where children learn about skin groups so that they can be proud of who they are.
  • Be a place where children learn what respect is… respect for themself first, then others.
